Heavenly Sword and Dragon Slaying Saber is the last part of the trilogy which began with Legend of the Condor Heroes and continued in Return of the Condor Heroes. The drama takes place nearly 100 years after the events of Return of the Condor Heroes in a China ruled by the Mongolian Yuan Dynasty. Legend says that whoever obtains the Heavenly Sword and Dragon Slaying Saber can rule the world. Zhang Wu Ji (Joseph Zeng) was orphaned at a young age by schemes to discover secrets of these two weapons. Despite his preference to live a non-violent life, Wu Ji finds himself embroiled in the struggles for power and must fight to save himself and others he loves.

Hua Bu Qi (Ariel Lin) has been following her uncle and wandering around since she was a child. One day, she meets an admirable swordsman named Lian Yi Ke (Zhang Bin Bin) and falls for him. But Lian Yi Ke is in fact Chen Yu, the only son of the 7th Prince who plans to seize the throne. Any hopes of a life together as a couple are thus dashed. Hua Bu Qi barely escapes death and flees. On top of that, she learns that she is already promised to Dong Fang Shi (Austin Lin), whose grandfather wants to use her because she holds the key to a treasure. In order to find an alternate energy source to save their home, Fire travels to the glorious age of Tang dynasty where he meets a person who looks exactly like his long-lost love, the God of Wind, and ignites a complicated romance between them.
