can you upload SRT version on subscene? translators have problems to translate Hardsub version to another languages.

  2. KG says:

Are these projects still being worked on? I kind of want to start the Oh My General one but Dec 14th Ripening Orange was announced. January 16th Episode 1 was released. I don’t really know when episode 2 was subbed.

From the looks of it (without any idea of timelines) you guys are doing the CN Drama stuff first which is understandable… but that feels more like you’re a fixer for people who can subtitle and Chinese drama makers who might want to attract a wider audience. And the question from the perspective of people like me who might want to crowdfund is: why donate if the one you donate to will constantly be placed on the backburner as Chinese drama makers contact you to sub their drama?

Those are my thoughts and why I’m kind of on the fence. $250 to start up Oh My General with the real possibility it might not ever get subbed (despite best intentions). Because you already have 2 where people donated and we have only 4 episodes of that done in 2 months.

    • CDB says:

I perfectly understand your concerns and yes, you’re right with that we’re currently prioritizing the projects given by CN Drama. We have to, since they’re paying us and we have been given deadlines. The time is tight. We also started out as a rather small team, but our team has been growing lately, luckily. πŸ™‚ When I introduced the idea of subbing with the support of donations by fans, I actually didn’t imagine that streaming companies would be interested in cooperating with us. I also wrote about that when I announced our first project from CN Drama, see here: https://cdramabase.com/2017/12/14/announcing-our-next-subbing-projects/

Still, I do feel very apologetic to the fans who are waiting for the next episodes of Dating Hunter and Ripening Orange. However, even though progress has been super slow so far because of the CN Drama projects coming in between, we will finish all the projects we started. Actually, A Splendid Life in Beijing will be finished in 5 days and we haven’t gotten a new project from CN Drama yet, so I’m positive that we’ll finally be able to release several episodes of our first two projects in the second half of February!

If you’re thinking about donating for Oh My General, I’d suggest that you wait till the end of the current month to see how the progress on our projects will be then. That might appease your concerns. πŸ™‚ And who knows, maybe some other volunteers will already start subbing the videos on Youtube in the meanwhile.

      • CDB says:

There’s one more thing I want to add. Even if we’ll get new projects from streaming companies in the future, after those two projects, I have a better understanding of how fast our team can work and how much is possible in a certain time frame. With this gained experience, I’ll try my best to negotiate deadlines that will allow us to also continue working on the other projects at the same time.

        • Sarah says:

How is the current status of probably subbing Oh my General? Does it make sense to donate or wonβ€˜t the project start someday soon?

        • CDB says:

First of all, I’m sorry for the late reply. Real life kept me so busy these days that I wasn’t able to come online.

As for now, it isn’t likely that we will start a new subbing project anytime soon, since we’re still working on quite a few dramas (and the costs for those projects aren’t covered yet either). Unless someone donates the 250$, then we will start subbing immediately, as promised.

        • KG says:

Alright. Hopefully you guys are just waiting for approvals? I see you finished the CN Drama one and you’re just waiting for them to upload.

Also Sarah, I still don’t mind putting up a full $250 to get things started assuming more progress has been made on the first two donation dramas. Right now on youtube YoYo TV Channel or whatever… there’s one young woman providing subtitles and I’d really like to give her help but I don’t know anyone who can subtitle.

        • Sarah says:

Yeah, I am aware of the subbing project on YouTube. And unfortunately I don’t know anybody either who could give her a hand. And, being realistic, this project seems to be far too big for just one person and I am really kind of annoyed with all the subbings which stopped halfway. Don’t misunderstand, I really appreciate the kind intentions, but there are a lot recently. Kind of stresses me out. So I would rather try it with a donation just to be on the safe side πŸ˜‰

        • CDB says:

@KG: Give us one or two more days and there will be several new episodes with subs on Youtube. πŸ™‚

        • KG says:

Yeah I agree with you. I expect her to stop at some point and she said she would have to at one point because she’s going back to China in a few weeks and isn’t sure how to get around their blocking of sites like Youtube. Like I said, as long as it looks like progress is being made on the first two dramas that had donations, I’ll drop $250.

        • CDB says:

If you know who is subbing Oh My General on Youtube, you could actually try contacting her and ask her if she’d be interested in joining our team. Since we’re working offline and then upload the subs onto Youtube later, she won’t need to be able to access the videos on Youtube (she can use any other site for watching the video). If she’s interested, she can send me an email to alice@cdramabase.com.

        • KG says:

Unfortunately I don’t know how to contact her and I don’t have an account on Youtube or Google to contact her with.

        • CDB says:

Have talked with her, she will join our team! We are ready to start anytime. πŸ™‚

        • Sarah says:

Yes! Iβ€˜ve already read it on YouTube :-). So you will start after you received 250$, right? Or is she doing it for free?

        • CDB says:

Since she joined us, I will pay her like everyone else in our team. So yes, we’re just waiting for donations now. πŸ™‚

        • Sarah says:

Donated for oh my General. Hope, others will join and we can get the project started in the near future πŸ™‚

        • KG says:

Oh she joined you guys, nice. If I donate a little bit over the $250 to ‘start’ it would you feature that + the other 2 on the front page with an announcement just to remind people of the 2 dramas and now Oh My General? I’m home for lunch and have to head back soon but I don’t mind donating more than the full amount assuming Sarah hasn’t yet.

        • Sarah says:

I donated 40$ as a starter. If there is some amount lacking please let me know! Am willing to donate some more. Itβ€˜s worth it!

        • CDB says:

@Sarah: Since this is a huge project, we will obviously need a lot more than 250$ to cover for the whole drama. But I hope that more fans will come forward and donate a little, then it shouldn’t be a problem to get the sum together. πŸ™‚

        • KG says:

Hopefully it doesn’t take too long to clear, I used direct from one of my bank accounts to save a bit on fees whereas a credit card should clear instantly.

        • CDB says:

Well, now there is a big surprise. Viki just licensed Oh My General! It doesn’t make sense for us to translate the drama as well then. What about your donations, Sarah and KG? Is there any other drama you’d like us to start subbing? Otherwise, I can also send you your money back. Just let me know.

        • CDB says:

Looks like the Youtube subber still wants to contine subbing the episodes on Youtube on her own. But our team won’t do that when the drama will now become available elsewhere. Better use our resources for other dramas that are still unsubbed instead.

        • Sarah says:

Oh thatβ€˜s good news! But I am glad the subber on YouTube continues the subbing project. Sometimes Viki shows arenβ€˜t available in Germany due to lacking licenses. So I am on the safe side.
Let me think about how to use my donation. I will let you know soon!

        • Sarah says:

Just made up my mind. Is it possible for you to transfer the donation to the YouTube subber? I think this would be fair…

        • KG says:

I don’t have a major preference. Maybe if you can send Sarah’s donation to that youtube subber then send $60 to make it an even $100 and keep the rest for the dramas you’re currently working on.

        • CDB says:

All right. She now decided not to join our team after all, but I will contact her again and see if I can send her the $100. Will let you know then.
KG, since you donated so much, I should still let you choose a drama (or two). Do you have any favorite actors or actresses? Any genres, plots you prefer? Since I put the list of possible projects together myself, I know well which dramas are on it and could make some suggestions based on your preferences. Maybe we can find something from that huge list that might interest you. πŸ™‚ Or else, if in the future I can add a drama that picks your interest to the list, you can also tell me then.

        • KG says:

I guess the reason I like Oh My General is because 1) period drama 2) the female lead is strong 3) there’s some comedy with a point (what does it mean to be a husband and wife, a man or a woman) while still being serious at times.

I’ll think about it more when I get home tonight in 4-5 hours and I’ll take a serious look at your list. The two dramas you’re currently working on: Dating Hunter & Ripening Orange looked interesting but that’s just judging by names/preview pictures.

        • KG says:

I should add: I also like the contentious nature of their relationship, the bickering and that she is actively pursuing him instead of passively waiting to receive like a lot of other shows.

        • CDB says:

Ok, take your time looking through it.
Legend of the Dragon Pearl could be something for you. There seems to be quite a lot of comedic elements and it has a bickering couple as well. Then there is The Glory of Tang Dynasty, which probably has less comedy but features a strong female lead and was highly popular in China. My Amazing Bride is another period rom-com and Legend of Ace also seems pretty strong on the comedy.

        • CDB says:

I forgot to mention Nothing Gold Can Stay. A strong female lead (based on a real person) and one of last year’s most successful dramas.

        • KG says:

I took a look at some of the list last night and The 2018 remake of A Step Into the Past looks interesting. Legend of the Ace does as well but apparently the ending is a tough one. I think they’re both time travel themed so a bit crazy. I didn’t have as much time as I thought last night so maybe when I get home tonight (Friday) I’ll have a bit more time. Those are the two I’m leaning towards. I watched an episode or two of My Amazing Bride without subs and I’m not sure I can deal with the male lead’s voice and actions if he’s like that for the majority of the drama

        • Sarah says:

I agree with you. A step into the past looks really interesting. Itβ€˜ my second favorite after oh my General πŸ˜‰

        • KG says:

Yeah out of the two that one is probably the one that interests me. I did look at an episode to get a feel for it. I’ll probably do the same for the other, quickly review the list for the ones I haven’t looked up a summary for and then pick one.

        • CDB says:

Take your time deciding, we have enough other projects to work on in the meanwhile anyway. πŸ™‚
Since both the A Step Into the Past remake and Legend of Ace are shorter than Oh My General and fall into the $150 category, we can also sub both. Although I’d prefer we first sub one and than the other, if it is okay with you, because working on 4 dramas simultaneously is already a lot. We will also concentrate on Dating Hunter and Ripening Orange in the following weeks, because I want to finish them soon since the fans have already been waiting for a long time, and be slower with the other projects.

        • Sarah says:

Well, take your time in deciding. I am already overjoyed that somebody takes sitp into consideration;-)

        • KG says:

I’m in no rush and I don’t think I would pick two unless you and your team really don’t mind… and even then there’s no rush and I’d honestly prefer it if you completed the stuff you’re doing now before starting my request. The only one I was in a big rush to see was Oh My General and now there’s some certainty Viki will subtitled it starting April 24th.

        • CDB says:

All right, then you tell me which drama(s) you want when we finish our first two projects. πŸ™‚
I hope to finish them both in the next two months. Looking at our pace so far (we have subbed 95 episodes since late November), this should be doable.

        • Sarah says:

@KG: if you donβ€˜t mind, please keep me posted which dramas you then finally choose. If step into the past isnβ€˜t among them, I will make the donation.
BTW: the YouTube subber of oh my General says thank you for the donation πŸ˜‰

        • KG says:

I had a bit of time so I watched part of the first episode of Legend of Ace and it seems a little bit more serious (even though they’re both comedies).

I’ll go with A Legend of a Modern Man Gets Back to Qin Dynasty as my choice and then maybe once there’s some progress on that I’ll donate some more money and start Legend of Ace later on. I’m not in a rush but it would be interesting to watch them both and I don’t mind donating more money (just not right now since $350 was a lot in one go and I don’t want to follow it up with even more right away, but another big donation a few months from now is fine with me).

        • CDB says:

Hi KG! As you’ve probably already seen, I was on hiatus for some time. I’m sorry for that. As to the A Step into the Past remake, we still haven’t started subbing it. However, other people have taken on this project in the meantime: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5Fgv45tVMI
You were also interested in Legend of Ace, right? Or is there any other drama that you’re also interested in?

        • KG says:

It’s been so long I forget the email I used in those initial posts. I got reminded of this by the DramaFever shutdown.

I’m fine with that first one I picked A Step Into the Past unless you aren’t planning to do it at all. I kind of forget what Ace of Legend was about.

        • CDB says:

          Nice to hear from you!

Well, it doesn’t make much sense for us to sub A Step Into the Past when it has already become available with subs in the meantime.

Since you wrote before that Legend of Ace looks interesting as well, we started this project now. A subber is currently working on the first episode. But let me know if you find any other unsubbed dramas that interest you. πŸ™‚

  3. SoCalTBone says:

My wife & I are very much enjoying A Splendid Life in Beijing. Thank you so much, all your efforts are greatly appreciated. Eagerly awaiting more episodes. Happy Lunar New Year to all.

    • CDB says:

I’m happy to hear that you two enjoy watching A Splendid Life in Beijing!
We just finished subbing the whole drama, so we now only need to wait till CN Drama uploads the episodes onto Youtube. πŸ™‚

    • CDB says:

Hi, I’m sorry for the late reply, I was on hiatus for some time.
We have stopped subbing it since other people already continued in the meantime. The drama is completely subbed in Youtube now.

  4. Table122000 says:

Bless you for finishing Age of Legends! Thank you so much to everyone on the Age of Legends team!

    • CDB says:

I’m sorry but I can’t give you a specific date. But we will do our best to complete it as soon as possible.

      • Vivianneke says:

I read on youtube that somebody hired a subber for Mengfei … so I think that can be taken of your list … I left a donation for Mengfei but I am quite happy for other drama translations, the more dramas subbed the better

        • CDB says:

Thank you for letting me know! We have already finished translating quite a few episodes, though. I send the translations directly to YoYo TV and don’t know when they will upload them.

As to the comment on Youtube that you mentioned, I looked it up and I’m unsure if it can be trusted. Only subtitles for two episodes have appeared since then. I also took a quick look at the quality of the subtitles and they don’t seem to have been written by someone you’d pay to do the job. But I will continue to observe the situation and if more subtitles appear, we will stop subbing then.

        • qp83 says:

I read in the comments that whoever was supposed to sub for payment dropped the idea because the subber thought it was to complicated. So still nobody subbing it. So I think you can safely continue subbing.

  5. JohannaLinnea says:

On Mengfei Comes Across, ep 11 that shows as subbed, has maybe 5% subbed,
At this rate, we’re getting 1 subbed ep per 3 weeks or so. Please don’t stop subbing it! It’s the only historical Chinese comedy that’s worth watching at the moment.
