Our First Subbing Project + Special Offer

I am very happy to be able to announce that we can already start with our first subbing project thanks to everyone’s help! Our first project will be the 2014 rom-com Dating Hunter by Croton Media! Our subbers have already started working on it and the first episodes will soon be ready. 🙂

Dating Hunter tells the story of four young people who are “dating experts” and together help their clients arrange the perfect date. With a rating of 8.2 in Douban, it is among the 20 highest rated Cdramas of all times! I will soon post more details on this drama.

A big thank you to everyone who contributed for making this start possible! However, we still need a lot more support in order to be able to finsih this project and also start new ones (also simultaneously if we receive enough donations).

If you haven’t donated yet, please consider it. 🙂 You don’t necessarily need a PayPal account to be able to donate, you can simply use your credit card or bank account. See here:

PP

And please tell your friends and family, spread the word and let more people know about our project!

Furthermore, we are making a special offer:

If you donate at least

$100 USD for a short web drama
$150 USD for a drama of normal length
$250 USD for a drama with more than 45 episodes
$300 USD for a variety show

you can name us a title from the list of possible projects and we will immediately start subbing it!

You don’t need to contribute that much, of course. We are happy about every single dollar we get! And I think it is more fair to let the donators decide which dramas should be subbed. So instead of doing a poll where everyone can vote like I planned before, I will only take the wishes of the donators into consideration and determine the next subbing project (once we can start it) by how many donators wanted the drama.

You can donate by clicking on the button below:

Thank you for your support!

I think what you’re suggesting is a great idea. However, you should also do updates on where each series stands so the donor’s don’t ‘double-dip’ so to speak. In other words, what if I donate $250 for a series and someone else donates the same amount for that series? Will you return half the amount I donated so the series is divided among me and new donor? Also what happens if someone donates for a drama and that drama/channel gets pulled from youtube for whatever reason? You also have to take into account whether the series already been released on dvd/blu ray already subbed by the production agency. We do not want to take money away from these companies producing the shows. You might also need to take note of any legal ramifications on subbing content without expressed prior permission. I’ve seen many channels/videos taking down on youtube because of copyright issues. If money is involved, it’ll cause more issues. I know you mean well but you must protect yourself and your team. These are just some of the questions potential donors will have and some things to think about. Lastly transparency is needed for this type of service.

I will immediately announce it when we start a new project, therefore “double-dipping” can’t happen. Also, we will only subtitle dramas that were legally uploaded on Youtube by the production companies or legal streaming portals themselves. This means what we do is all legal and the companies give you the permission to subtitle when they activate the “add subtitles” function on their videos. Videos are only being taken down when they were uploaded illegally.

I think there should be a system like the stock market: let’s say 1$ = 1 vote. When a normal length drama gets 150 votes, it gets subbed. That way, whether you donate 5$ or 500$, you can get a say in the process. If I donate 150$, instead of only getting 1 drama subbed, I could choose to cast 75 votes on drama A and 75 votes on drama B. It could speed up the process and encourage others to participate so that we can sub the maximum amount of shows possible. If you could be transparent and give us an update in realtime (or daily) about the amount of $/votes for each show, I really think a lot of people including myself will join this project.

Thank you for the suggestion! However, I think it will be difficult to implement.
First of all, I’d like to explain why I chose to make this special offer. There are two main reasons for it:

      1. I think people who donate huge sums should be reimbursed in some way, so if they have a certain drama in mind, I want to thank them by starting to work on that drama immediately and hereby assure that we will do that.

      2. I want to give people an incentive and give them a possibility to get what they want if they are desperate for a certain drama.

Still, I need to name minimum sums in order to have a high possibility that we will also be able to complete that drama. The above sums are still by far not enough to cover the costs for a whole drama. Let’s look at an example, say someone donates 150$ and wishes for a drama with 40 episodes. That would be 3,75$ per episode and subbing is a lot of hard work, it takes several hours to complete one single episode. So you can already see that those sums are definitely not enough. I’m making a risky offer here and hope that a lot of people will donate (little sums) for the general idea so that we will be able to complete it if we start another drama. In the worst case I’ll have to pay from my own pocket if we start working on a drama in such a way and no more money comes in. I also don’t believe that many people will contribute such huge sums, but I still want to give them the possibility.

Now back to your suggestion. Let’s say we implement such a system and start working on a certain drama once it has 150 votes. It will be a lot easier to get there if everyone could contribute to it and we might have to start working on 10 new dramas in no time. But as I said already, that money is not enough to cover the costs for the whole drama. And if I say a drama needs 1000 votes instead of only 150, the number is too big to still be attractive. Why would someone donate 5$ for 5 votes when you’re only at 50 and 950 more would still be needed?

I hope that people will support us with the general idea. We unfortunately can’t consider the wishes of every single person. However, the more people support us, the more dramas we can start working on and the higher the chances that there will also be a drama among it that you’re hoping for. 🙂

Or you can wait and see which subbing projects we take on. When we start with a drama, it is not necessarily guaranteed yet that we can already cover the costs for all episodes. So if we start with a drama that you like, you can choose to donate something then to help us finish it.

Please keep suggestions coming! Maybe we can find other ways or solutions to make the best out of this project. 🙂

I see. What would be the true cost of 1 drama then? I understand that you lack ressources and manpower to implement a system like that. But what about big donors? If let’s say I donate 1500$, can you guarantee the completion of 10 dramas of my choosing?

        • CDB says:

It’s hard to say how much one drama would cost, it’s different for every single drama and depends on how many episodes it has and also on how difficult it is to translate (some dramas have harder dialogues than others, e.g. historicals or genre dramas with a lot of technical vocabulary).

Yes, since I already made this promise now, if someone really donates 1500$, I would have to make it possible somehow to finish all 10 dramas.

  3. lizzy says:

Suppose I want a drama to get subbed and I only paid for that (particular drama) but no other people paid (for that drama) then what are the chances that it get subbed. And what if the amount paid by particular person is less than the mentioned one ’cause everybody can’t able to pay the mentioned amount ’cause of currency difference mainly. For some mentioned amount is too less and for some its extremely high (depend upon country). I know as you said each single penny will be useful and counted so I will try. One more thing, the amount mentioned is for per episode or whole drama.

    • CDB says:

I am well aware that not everybody has that much money to spend. However, it is unfortunately simply not possible to start subbing every single drama donators wish for. We hope that you will support us with the general idea. The more people support us, the more dramas we can start working on and the higher the chances that there will also be a drama among it that you’re hoping for. 🙂 We will of course still consider your wishes and choose to sub dramas that many donators are wishing for. And if you donate more than others (although not as much as the sums in our special offer), we will certainly try our best to start working on the drama you want as soon as possible!

The sums in our special offer are for the whole drama, so to say. Although it can’t cover the costs for subbing the whole drama, I will guarantee that we will finish subbing all episodes if someone chooses to donate that much.

My personal recommendation is to complete this first project and see what goes on from there. Dramas on the possible list may end up being licensed by then, considering that Dating Hunter is a drama from 2014.

    • CDB says:

Our subbers now will keep working on Dating Hunter till we complete it. If we start a second subbing project at the same time, only if we can finance the completion of both dramas, and I will recruit more subbers then.

  5. Fishisteve says:

I think you should make a poll based on contributors drama suggestions.Subtitle the most voted for one by the contributors.I also think you should perhaps ask for a monthly donations for Feed the Subbers. lol 🙂
I know I can not afford to drop a large sum of money to have something subtitled.I can afford a small monthly donation to feed my addiction.
I am looking forward to the first project.

    • CDB says:

Creating a poll for the contributors is a great idea. I’m already noting down all the wishes from the donators, but considering that there are continuously new dramas that we can add to the list here, I think I will send out a mail to everyone when we think we should be able to start the next project soon and ask again which dramas they’re interested in. Then I can create a poll based on that and maybe give every contributor as many votes as the sum he donated (to include Dracan’s idea from above in some way), as in everyone still votes for one drama only, but the vote will count x5 if someone donated 5$ till then, x20 if someone donated 20$ till then and so on. Let me know what you think about this idea, everyone!

I will suggest the idea of monthly donations to everyone in the next post related to this project, thanks for the reminder! 🙂
